A three-year funded project presented to the Dairy Science Department at Virginia Tech by the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) and the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) was announced on August 24, 2005.

This three year project will include an incentive payment program for dairy producers that are within 15% of their phosphorus intake requirements. In addition an intensive feeding management study will concentrate on 10 herds in the Chesapeake Bay watershed. Extensive testing of feeds for phosphorus and other nutrients will regularly be conducted and educational programs and materials will be available to all Virginia dairy farmers and their consultants. Project personnel are Katharine Knowlton, Charlie Stallings, Bob James, and Mark Hanigan all in the Dairy Science Department at Virginia Tech.
